A creative 14-year-old boy, lives with his grandmother Carry Tefsen in Zeedijk, Amsterdam. She runs the famous cafe-hotel "De Rode Laars" ("The Red Boots").
Drawn to the world of writing, Constant escapes his surroundings full of drunks, gamblers, and fighters by composing poems. His grandmother wishes for him to take over the cafe's management. In secret, Constant enters a National Poetry Competition: a new Vondel is born!
